In around 2015 I was approached by a guy called Chris to create a backing track for a song for him. I only had very rough demo to work from and I got a mate of mine called Brian Rice to sing the lead part. Chris was over the moon with the recording and eventually revealed he was Sir Chris Evans, an advisor to the PM as a bio scientist and he had been since the days of Thatcher.
He then mentioned he had an album of songs based on letters written from WW1 soldiers to their loved ones who tragically never returned.
He told me he wanted me to take on the project which would have a healthy budget and I could hire whoever I wanted to help put the music together.
I spent the best part of 6 months on the recordings and in the process we managed to significantly improve our studio gear with the proceeds.
Chris would send me guitar parts he had recorded himself for me to weave into the tracks. This could be challenging as in some cases he would send multi takes in a stream of consciousness which I spent countless hours piecing together.
A lot of the songs had already been started on Logic by a previous musician and Chris was keen to use these as references. After my initial effort in which I was left to my own devices, and he loved the results, I then found myself restrained by these logic tracks.
The resulting recordings are of varying quality as a result, but Chris was great to work for and an inspiring songwriter and musician and I was grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the project.
I took the productions as far as I could and they were eventually finished by Youth (Ex Killing Joke) and other musicians like Seonaid O'Connor, Brian Eno, Ronnie Wood and Nick Mason took part in some of the recordings I had established.
A great experience overall, and a surprising job for what was initially just a backing track session. I met many influential people through Chris and his legendary parties at his home near Cirencester.
At the time of writing I don't think the album was ever released and hope they do see the light of day.
